چکیده

We studied a long time series, dating from 1969-2004, of zooplankton biomass in the shallow and wind-exposed Darß-Zingst lagoon (Northern Germany). Our aim was to investigate long-term changes and inter-annual variability. Copepods and rotifers occurred over the total time of investigation. Other groups, phyllopods and the larvae of an invaded polychaete, developed considerable biomass values only during restricted periods. All groups showed a stable pattern of seasonal change with a dominance of copepods in spring and late summer, the phyllopods during early summer, the rotifers in mid-summer and the poychaete larvae during late autumn and winter. Besides these tendencies, a considerable inter-annual variability of the biomass level was observed. This resulted mainly from climatic differences between the years. Deterministic chaos as a source of variability could not be identified in the data sets. In the long-term run, two cases of change were observed in the dominance structure and overall biomass level during a rather short period of a few years. (1) In the beginning of the 1980s, a pronounced decrease of copepod biomass occurred. This resulted from a shift in food quality, which probably was caused by a switch of the Darß-Zingst lagoon from a macrophyte dominated system to a system dominated by phytoplankton. The phyllopods disappeared completely in connection with this event. (2) In the beginning of the 1990s, a clear decrease of the rotifer biomass was observed at the same time as the alien polychaete species Marezellaeria neglecta invaded the Darß-Zingst lagoon. Whether or not the decline of rotifers is causally linked to the polychaete invasion is not yet clear.

Long-term copepod dynamics in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea): recent changes and trends

Cluster and time series analyses were applied to a 1970–1999 data set of zooplankton collected from the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea). Two time periods were compared: 1970–1980 and 1986–1999. Associations of copepod species were identified and an attempt was made to reveal their long-term dynamics and significant patterns over the study period. Two main groups with 2 and 3 subgroups e...

Long-term spatial and temporal variability of ambient carbon monoxide in Urmia, Iran

One of the pillars of epidemiologic research on the long-term health effects of air pollution is to estimate the chronic exposures over space and time. In this study, we aimed to measure the intra-urban ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations within Urmia city in Iran, and to build a model within the geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the annual and seasonal means anywhere with...

Nearly simultaneous multiband monitoring of blazars is very limited and most studies reported in literature are conflicting, too. Although optical variability on intra-night timescales is now a well established phenomenon for blazars, its relationship to long-term variability remains unclear. Possible clues could come from monitoring the optical spectrum for correlation with brightness. The pr...

Temporal-Spatial Variability of the Severest Dry Spells in the North-West of Iran

The variability of temperature and precipitation is regarded as one of the main characteristics of the climate.Precipitation and its results, especially results such as droughts, vary on different temporal and spatial scales. Thepurpose of this paper is to determine the frequency of the inter-annual variability of the driest month in north-westIran. In order to obtain the best results, we used ...

Long-term and seasonal zooplankton dynamics in the northwest Iberian shelf and its relationship with meteo-climatic and hydrographic variability

Long-term and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton abundance and taxonomic composition and its relationship with meteo-climatic and hydrographic factors were investigated on the northwest Iberian shelf. Zooplankton were collected monthly (1995–2011) at two locations within and off the Rı́a of Vigo (Station 1 and Station 3, respectively). Total abundance of zooplankton (NZT) varied annually following...
